Créé par la Marine royale néerlandaise pour être utilisé lors des opérations de surveillance maritime, ce drone multirotor peut décoller et se poser sur un navire en mer. Il est capable de voler pendant plusieurs heures grâce à une motorisation électrique alimentée par une pile à combustible.

L’autonomie en vol est encore une fois l’entrave majeure à l’utilisation des drones à motorisation électrique pour de nombreuses applications, comme la surveillance, la livraison de médicaments, d’organes ou encore de colis… Les drones mutirotor sont souvent limités à une trentaine de minutes d’autonomie. Pour aller plus loin, il faut compter sur l’optimisation de l’aérodynamisme ou encore le moteur hybride qui a permis dernièrement de maintenir un drone en vol stationnaire pendant plus de dix heures.

Les chercheurs du Micro Air Vehicle Lab (MAVLab) de l’université de technologie de Delft aux Pays-Bas, misent, quant à eux, sur une motorisation alimentée par de l’hydrogène pour faire voler un drone pendant des heures. Des prototypes existent déjà mais il ne s’agit pas de drones multirotor mais d’ailes volantes et ils évoluent avec des vitesses relativement faibles. Les chercheurs de l’université se sont associés à la Marine royale néerlandaise et à ses garde-côtes pour développer un drone à hydrogène qui puisse décoller et atterrir verticalement tout en étant capable de voler horizontalement efficacement pendant plusieurs heures. Pour y parvenir, leur drone combine l’hydrogène et des batteries comme source d’énergie pour alimenter les moteurs électriques.

Pour corser l’épreuve, les premiers tests se sont déroulés avec succès avec l’appontage d’un navire en pleine mer. Un exercice difficile, comme le savent les télépilotes l’ayant expérimenté. Le vent, l’environnement salin, le mouvement du navire et son tangage, ainsi que la zone d’atterrissage limitée sont autant de facteurs venant entraver les manœuvres de décollage et surtout d’appontage. Dans ces phases, les moteurs peuvent avoir besoin d’énormément d’énergie. Si le drone peut donc décoller et atterrir verticalement, il dispose également d’une voilure fixe pour évoluer horizontalement en dépensant moins d’énergie. C’est ainsi que, pendant les tests, le drone a pu rester en vol durant plus de trois heures trente.

Le drone pèse 13 kilogrammes et dispose d’une large envergure de trois mètres. Il est soulevé et propulsé par 12 moteurs qui présentent autant de dispositifs de sécurité en cas de défaillance. Ces moteurs surnuméraires sont surtout utiles pour un appontage en mer agitée avec du vent. Côté énergie, l’aéronef est équipé d’une bouteille d’hydrogène de 6,8 litres constituée de matériaux composites et de carbone. La pile à combustible de 800 W vient convertir l’hydrogène en électricité pour les moteurs. Pour les phases de décollage et d’atterrissage, des batteries supplémentaires viennent délivrer le surplus de puissance nécessaire.

Plutôt que d’opter pour un moteur hybride thermique, le choix de la pile à combustible s’est imposé aux scientifiques car ils estiment que cette motorisation est la plus respectueuse de l’environnement et qu’elle est l’avenir d’une aviation vertueuse. Ils considèrent que l’hydrogène est la meilleure alternative aux énergies combustibles pour se rapprocher de l’autonomie et de la puissance qu’elles délivrent. Rien qu’avec ses capacités actuelles, ce drone pourrait être exploité par la Marine néerlandaise pour réaliser des tâches de reconnaissance et d’inspection.

    die Errichtung eines « sicheren Tourismuskorridors ».
    Die Menschen, die trotz geschlossener Grenzen einreisen dürfen, weil sie in Spanien eine Erstwohnung haben oder eine Arbeitsstelle
    antreten, müssen zwei Wochen isoliert.
