Les microplastiques sont désormais présents sur toute la surface de la Terre, même dans les endroits les plus reculés. Comment ont-ils fait pour se répandre sur de telles distances ?
Les microplastiques ont contaminé l’ensemble de la Planète, même les lieux les plus hostiles à l’Homme, comme l’Antarctique. Les scientifiques ne comprennent pas encore comment ces petites particules de plastiques peuvent voyager aussi loin de leur lieu de production. Une publication récente, parue dans Science Advances, apporte des éléments d’explication.
Expérimentalement, les chercheurs de l’université de Princeton ont utilisé un tube de quartz qui comprend une grande quantité de billes de verre de 35 et 48 µm de diamètre. Entre chaque bille se forment de minuscules espaces. À chaque extrémité du tube, il y a des capillaires par lesquels les scientifiques injectent à pression constante une suspension colloïdale dont les particules de polystyrène font environ 1 µm. Grâce à un microscope confocal, ils ont pu alors étudier la dynamique du trajet des petites particules entre les pores formés par les billes de verre.
Cette expérience a permis de mettre en évidence que, lorsque la pression du liquide est faible, les microparticules de polystyrène s’accumulent au même endroit, formant un caillot. Lorsque la pression augmente, ce caillot se désagrège et les microparticules sont à nouveau en suspension. Elles circulent entre les billes de verre avant de se reformer un peu plus loin lorsque la pression diminue à nouveau.
« Non seulement nous avons identifié cette dynamique des particules qui se bloquent, obstruent les pores et s’accumulent en dépôt pour finalement être poussées, mais il apparait aussi que ce processus permet aux particules de se répandre sur des distances plus grandes que nous ne l’avions imaginé avant, » explique Sujit Datta, professeur-assistant à l’université de Princeton et responsable de cette étude.
Les scientifiques pensent que c’est par ce moyen que les microplastiques parviennent à contaminer tous les environnements. Ils sont transportés par des particules ou des sédiments poreux dans lesquels ils s’accumulent avant de se répandre selon les conditions hydriques.
